The terraces were crossed by 'valegoni', or ditches that served for access and drainage canals. Currently they are still used for agriculture. Terraces closer to the center have been maintained wheras the upper ones show clear signs of abandonment.
The 'Valle dei Bastioni' is one of the widest. Its composition of detritico has created a gradule incline. There are many waterways and minor valleys that provide irrigation with frequent precipitation that have created a favorable microclimate for the terraces.
